A brand new Fire Station #8 was desperately needed to replace the original station built in 1958. The previous building was filling with mold from beneath the ground, where it sat upon a large cistern. Additionally, structural issues were present throughout the structure, and the building was approaching a state where it would be unsafe to use. This facility does NOT replace Fire Station #1 which is still in operation downtown.
The new facility has been built to improve safety, health and well being, and living conditions for first responders. These included separation of air handlers between living and equipment (fire trucks) areas; LED lighting set to adjust to lighting all day, windows in every room, generator to run in cases of storm or power outages, and individual sleeping rooms for each responder, among other things.
The grounds were planned so station vehicles will exit from the west bay doors onto S 17th Street and return through the east bay doors from Van Dorn Street, reducing traffic blockages as the vehicles returned from responses.
There are 12 responders in each shift and there are two shifts. Their hours can vary depending on staffing, sick or vacation time, and other factors.
The public is welcome to come for a tour to main door anytime except from 11am-1pm daily, as this is a meal time and is meant to allow the first responders time to unwind during the day.. Come to main door at the Southwest corner and ring the bell.
